Sample Insights: Organic Top Loops
Whether you produce house, techno, beats or other the need for groove enhancing top loops is a production constant. With this in mind our in house team set their sites on one of our most popular products to date, Organic Top Loops.
We recently sat down with the team to discuss how it was made, what you can expect to find in the collection and any more sample gossip.
Tell us a bit about the studio and current production set up.
The current in house set up is a plethora of gear old and new, silly toys, random bits of modular gear and stacks of old guitar pedals, perfect for processing and mangling. We’ve also a lovely 2-track tape machine as well as all the usual computer based plug-ins and DAW’s.
Were there any inspirations behind the collection?
All of us produce house, techno or beats so providing a tool for adding organic textures to beats was a no brainer. We know how sterile things can get working in the box with the same old samples so allowing people to get stuck into our hours of weird location recordings felt like a great idea. Hopefully people are enjoying the content as much as we enjoyed making it all.
You mention using and manipulating location recordings, is this something you guys do a lot of?
Yeah, completely. It’s become a quite widely used technique with people like Amon Tobin championing it but it’s still something of a hidden art. With this collection we wanted to provide a stack of processed one shots to go with the grooves so they can get stuck in and create their own unique textures too. We love the idea that each sound has a story to go with it whether that be a happy accident or being chased by stray animals when recordings sounds, it’s all part of the process.
What can people expect in this collection?
So we wanted to cover a lot of ground but at the same time keep it quite focused. The tempo range goes from110-125 so predominantly is heading in a house / electronica direction but there’s something for everyone. Some of the loops utilised drum machines from classic 909’s to a few weirder older numbers where as some loops are completely organic and built from processed location recordings. Using the tape machine has added no end of hiss to them but for us that’s all part of the character. We feel they would compliment a solid kick pattern seamlessly and provide bags of shuffle.
